Koh Samui hotels range from luxury beachfront resorts to hidden boutique properties tucked into jungle hillsides. Thailand’s second-largest island offers a more relaxed alternative to Phuket, with palm-lined beaches, turquoise water, and a laid-back atmosphere that keeps travelers coming back year after year.
This guide breaks down the main areas where most travelers stay, along with Koh Samui hotels I’ve personally visited and reviewed. The island has accommodation for every budget: beachfront boutique resorts from around ฿3,000-5,000 per night, international luxury chains from ฿8,000+, and budget-friendly guesthouses under ฿2,000. Prices drop significantly outside peak season (December through February).
Getting around Koh Samui requires some planning. There’s no public transport system, so most travelers rely on Grab, rented scooters, or hotel shuttles. The island’s ring road connects all major beaches, and a drive from one end to the other takes roughly 45 minutes. Samui Airport (USM) is a privately operated airport with flights from Bangkok, so fares tend to be higher than other Thai islands. Alternatively, you can fly to Surat Thani and take a ferry.

Choose the right beach for your trip
Chaweng Beach
Chaweng is Koh Samui’s main hub and the island’s longest stretch of sand. This is where you’ll find the highest concentration of hotels, restaurants, shopping, and nightlife. The beach itself is wide and swimmable, though it gets crowded during peak season. Chaweng Walking Street comes alive at night with bars, live music, and street food.
If you want to be in the center of the action with easy access to everything, Chaweng is your spot. The tradeoff is that it’s the busiest and noisiest part of the island. Hotels here range from budget guesthouses along the back roads to five-star chains right on the beachfront.
Best for: First-time visitors, nightlife seekers, couples who want a mix of beach and entertainment.
Coral Cove & Chaweng Noi
Tucked between Chaweng and Lamai, Coral Cove is a series of small sheltered bays with some of the best snorkeling you’ll find directly from the shore in Koh Samui. The water is calmer here, the beaches are smaller and less crowded, and the vibe is noticeably more relaxed than Chaweng. This is where you stay if you want beach access without the noise.
Accommodation here tends to be hillside boutique resorts that take advantage of the elevated terrain for sea views. It’s a 10-minute drive to Chaweng’s restaurants and nightlife if you want it, but far enough away to feel like a different world.
Best for: Snorkeling enthusiasts, couples, nature lovers, travelers who want quiet with proximity to Chaweng.
Lamai Beach
Lamai is Samui’s second-largest beach and the go-to alternative for travelers who find Chaweng too hectic. The beach is slightly rockier in places but equally beautiful, and the restaurant scene is more local with excellent Thai food at better prices. Lamai has its own Walking Street that’s smaller and more manageable than Chaweng’s.
Best for: Travelers who want a balance of activity and relaxation, longer stays, budget-conscious visitors.
Bophut & Fisherman’s Village
Bophut’s Fisherman’s Village is one of the most charming areas on the island. The narrow streets are lined with converted wooden shophouses, boutique hotels, independent restaurants, and art galleries. The Friday Night Market is a weekly highlight. The beach is calm and family-friendly, though not as photogenic as Chaweng.
Best for: Couples, families, travelers who prefer character and charm over big-beach energy.
Maenam
Maenam sits on Samui’s north coast and attracts a quieter crowd. The beach is long and peaceful, with calm waters ideal for swimming. This area has some of the best value accommodation on the island, with beachfront bungalows at prices that would be impossible in Chaweng. It’s also close to the pier for boats to Koh Phangan and Koh Tao.
Best for: Budget travelers, families, island hoppers heading to Koh Phangan or Koh Tao.
Choeng Mon
Choeng Mon is a crescent-shaped bay in the northeast corner of the island, home to several of Samui’s top luxury resorts. The beach is sheltered and calm, the area is quiet, and you’ll find some of the island’s best fine dining within the resort compounds. It’s only 10 minutes from the airport, making it a convenient choice for short stays.
Best for: Luxury seekers, honeymooners, travelers who want seclusion and high-end service.

Tips for Booking Koh Samui Hotels
Best Time to Visit
December to February is peak season with the best weather but highest prices. March to June offers good weather with fewer crowds. Avoid October to November (monsoon season) when heavy rain can disrupt plans.
Getting Around
No public transport. Use Grab for convenience, or rent a scooter (฿200-300/day) if you’re comfortable riding. Hotels in Chaweng are most walkable. Elsewhere, you’ll need wheels.
Flights Are Expensive
Samui Airport is privately owned (Bangkok Airways), so flights cost more than other Thai islands. Budget alternative: fly to Surat Thani (฿1,000-2,000) and take a ferry (2-3 hours total).
Book Direct for Deals
Many smaller Koh Samui hotels offer better rates when you book directly or message them on Facebook/LINE. Resort-style properties often include breakfast at a small premium that’s worth it.
